Background design guidlines:

The total weight of the images contained within each design should not exceed 40k (average is 20k).
Any image can be a gif animation or a static gif/jpeg image.
Preferably, backgrounds should be either very dark or very light, since mid-color backgrounds make the text harder to read.
The design can also determine font attributes for the text written by the user.

And remember - Email should be, first of all, easy to read.

Please see below some examples for the most simple designs.

Example 1:  Background color + one image.

In this template there's an image which is aligned to one of the sides/corners of the email. This image should work well with the selected color, preferable in a way that the user can't tell when the image ends and the color begins. This is usually done by making the edges of the image in the same color as the background color.

Example 2:   A tiled background image.

This background image covers all the email space, and therefore it should not contain strong contrasts. The written text that comes over must be legible (you may determine text color, size and type).

There are two kinds of tiled backgrounds:

A) Regular (Image is usually a rectangle):

B) Vertical or horizontal tiles (Image could be vertically or horizontally tiled):

Example 3:  Animated image + tiled background image.

In this template there's an animated image (animated gif) plus a background color or a background image to match the animated image. You may add text to the eCard design.
